Flat Cloth Diapers Common Questions:

What Are Flat Cloth Diapers?

Flat cloth diapers are highly absorbent pieces of cloth that can be shaped around your baby's bottom.

The cloth flats need separate fasteners to keep them on your baby's waist. Some parents prefer using conventional diaper pins and others utilize Snappi fasteners.  Flats diapers are the most affordable kind of cloth diaper and the most commonly used worldwide. Most are cotton flats, but many varieties of bamboo, cotton, and hemp are readily available.

Flat diapers are thought to be the first one-size diapers because they can be adjusted and shaped to fit babies from birth to the time of potty-training.  Flat cloth diapers require diaper covers to keep them watertight. Covers are typically used several times in a row before washing them; yet another reason why flats are cost-effective!

Are Flats Or Prefolds Better?

Prefold diapers are like flat diapers because they are made of fabric and must be folded around your child. Prefolds are padded and thicken the center. The absorbancy area is pre-sewn into the middle, requiring less folding.

Prefolds, similar to flat cloth diapers, are affordable, and once you know how to fold and place them around your child, they are simple to use. Prefolds are made of cotton; however, the latest styles are bamboo and hemp blends. Prefolds still require covers and fasteners, just like flat cloth diapers require.

In terms of cost, they're nearly identical, depending on the materials used and the brand. Flat diapers do offer a little more flexibility since they aren’t pre-sewn into a diaper fold.

Do Flat Diapers Need A Diaper Cover?

Yes, Flat cloth diapers do still need to be covered with a waterproof cloth diaper cover.

What Materials Are Used In Flat Cloth Diapers?

Flat diapers are often made of cotton, the predominant fabric. You can, however, purchase bamboo flat diapers or hemp flat diapers. Cotton flat diapers can be made of organic or birdseye cotton.

Hemp is more absorbent and breathable than cotton, and it is also a very durable material, meaning you can expect to get plenty of use out of them.

Bamboo cloth diapers are stretchy flats that make the material easier to use. Bamboo blends provide extra softness to the cotton and are less likely to turn stiff and scratchy after repeated washes.
